Field Trips

On site, in classroom & virtual opportunities for groups small and large.

Inspiration

Inspire your students to a lifelong practice of enjoying, protecting, and stewarding cultural and ecological resources by connecting them to nature at Headwaters. These hands on, interactive, and investigative field experiences are focused on topics including: groundwater, watersheds, succession, geography, the water cycle, weathering, erosion, and deposition.

These lesson plans were developed in partnership with local teachers and based on 5th grade science TEKS. They are designed for students in grades 4-6. All experiences will include pre- and post-lessons for the classroom. Field trips are available in 3 formats:

Field Trip

Bring your class to Headwaters at the Comal for a 4 hour field investigation. Your class will be divided into four groups to cycle through facilitated learning stations throughout the Headwaters. Field investigations are led by Headwaters Educators and Volunteers and students will complete an interactive learning journal throughout the day. These experiences take place entirely outdoors, so students should come prepared for the weather.

Visit to Your Classroom

We’ll come to you for a hands-on, interactive experience that is a modified version of our on-site field investigation. Educators & Volunteers will bring activities for a one-hour Watershed Education program. Preferably, this will take place outside on your campus, so students can still get connected with nature during the program. Students will also receive interactive learning data and activity sheets to complete during the experience.

$50 per program
(mileage will be charged for schools over 20 miles from Headwaters at the Comal)

Virtual Visit

Bring Headwaters at the Comal into your classroom or home virtually. Students will engage with an Educator for a one-hour live-streamed interactive experience while virtually visiting Headwaters. These experiences will be themed on a topic of your choosing: Watersheds & Groundwater; the Water Cycle; Succession; Weathering, Erosion & Deposition. Programs are live streamed, allowing for interaction with an educator. Upon registration, the teacher will receive a unique link for their program.

$25 per class
